A stash of about 20 pounds of dynamite was found at a vacant Southeast Side home and subsequently detonated by a bomb squad Tuesday afternoon, officials report. According to KSAT, the explosive discovery was made by family members who were to swiftly clear the property. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) believes the dynamite might once have been used for stump removal.

The detonation was executed with assistance from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) bomb squad and the Fire Marshall on the 8400 block of Stuart Road. The BCSO spokesperson told KSAT that an evacuation was ordered within a 1,000-foot radius of the site as a precautionary measure. The explosives were reportedly safely detonated shortly after 1:30 p.m., with no injuries reported.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office was originally alerted to the potential hazard by relatives of the deceased homeowner while cleaning out the home, as confirmed by KENS 5. Deputies responded to the call near Loop 1604 and New Sulphur Springs Road, and upon confirmation of the explosives, the bomb squad was to immediately be brought in to handle the situation.

SAPD assured the community that the incident was "not a danger to public safety," though they suggested residents might feel a shake from the blast. As the smoke clears from this event, the investigation into how and why such a significant amount of dynamite came to languish forgotten in the recesses of a family home proceeds. The clearing operation remains under investigation at this time.
