In a gritty confrontation at a Georgia medical center, an inmate was shot dead by a correctional officer after seizing an officer's pepper spray and attacking another officer. The incident, which unfolded at the Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville, has spurred an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the escalation occurred on April 23 at around 8:45 p.m., when officers with the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) were overseeing 31-year-old inmate Jacob Henson, who earlier was treated for stabbing wounds from a separate altercation at Washington State Prison. The situation turned violent when Henson reportedly overpowered one of the officers and commandeered the officer's OC canister, incapacitating the officer with the spray.

Henson then advanced on a second officer, wielding the pepper spray as a weapon. It was at this point that the female officer discharged her firearm, fatally wounding Henson. Local authorities confirmed his death at the scene, marking another tragic endpoint to a string of events beginning with a prison fracas earlier that day.
