A domestic call turned shoot-out left a man dead and a woman injured in West Knoxville, authorities say. The shooting, involving Knoxville Police Department officers, occurred early Saturday morning, according to a press release from the department.

Officers were responding to a situation on the 4700 block of Santala Drive, where a man reportedly had a gun. Tensions escalated quickly when they arrived at the residence. Authorities said that after announcing their presence, they encountered the armed man, and within moments, the suspect opened fire on a woman inside of the home. Police fired back, hitting the man who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is now handling the probe into the events that unfolded.

The woman, who was shot in the face, was rushed to the UT Medical Center. Hospital officials have since stated that her injuries are not expected to be life-threatening. Following the violence, the officers involved were placed on routine administrative leave, while the Office of Professional Standards is set to conduct an internal administrative investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
