A University of Arizona sophomore's life was tragically cut short in a quadruple shooting in Tucson as the city and campus community grappled with the senseless violence that erupted early Sunday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 1:40 a.m. on April 28 near Country Club Road and Speedway Boulevard, claimed the life of 20-year-old Erin Jones and left three others injured, FOX 10 Phoenix reports. Jones was found with fatal injuries outside a home, and despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her wounds shortly after. Another victim was located inside a vehicle; the said victim has been hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Police indicate that a teenage girl and a man were also among the victims, both were treated at the hospital for their injuries, after self-transporting in a personal vehicle. They are both expected to recover, according to the Potter's House Church publication. The motivation for the shooting remains opaque, with Tucson police working diligently to unravel the evening's grim narrative—a large gathering is thought to have preceded the violence, dispersing before authorities arrived, complicating the investigation.

In the wake of the tragedy, University of Arizona President Robert Robbins extended his condolences and noted the profound impact of the loss, saying, "As some of you may already be aware, our Wildcat community suffered a tragic loss early this morning with the off-campus death of sophomore Erin Jones," as per the official statement, adding, "Our deepest sympathies go out to Erin's family in California and across the country, her friends, and her classmates in Tucson and Newport Beach, who are absorbing the heartbreaking news today."
