A 70-year-old man was taken into custody by Will County Sheriff’s deputies after reportedly shooting a 45-year-old woman in Lockport Township, authorities said. The incident, which took place in the quiet streets near 144th Place and Rickerman Road on Tuesday evening, left the community on edge as the woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The elderly suspect, whose name has not been released, was seen by witnesses walking around the property before they heard the gunfire, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Following the shooting, residents received a reverse 911 call urging them to stay indoors as the man retreated into his home, causing a brief standoff with law enforcement, deputies instituted a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area during the manhunt, afterward, the man surrendered peacefully to authorities.

Charges have yet to be announced against the septuagenarian, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The Will County Sheriff's Office has not commented on what might have led to the violent altercation between the neighbors.
