Archer City's Trevor Topper and Alice's Melanie Moreno Triumph as 2024 Top Troopers in Texas DPS CompetitionSource: Texas Department of Public Safety

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has just crowned its champions in the 12th annual Top Trooper Competition. Trevor Topper from Archer City seized the title of Top male Trooper, while Melanie Moreno from Alice was declared Top female Trooper. According to the DPS, the competition is a tribute to Trooper Javier Arana, Jr., who lost his life in the line of duty and competed in the first event back in 2012.

These two emerged victorious from a pool of 120 Troopers who pushed their limits at the Tactical Training Facility in Florence, showcasing their prowess in driving, firearms, physical fitness and mastery of the fundamentals over nine grueling events. A statement by DPS Director Steven McCraw highlighted the significance of the contest, "The Texas Department of Public Safety Top Trooper Competition is more than a contest—it’s about honoring the sacrifices many heroes, like Trooper Javier Arana, Jr., have made in the line of duty." McCraw extended his congratulations to Topper, and Moreno for clinching the 2024 Top Trooper awards.

The competition, which saw a record-setting participation of 16 female Troopers, awards winners in various skills categories. This year marked a first with the overall male and female winners each bagging a new patrol car along with the title. The triumph doesn't end here, as Trooper Moreno and Trooper Topper are slated to compete at the National LawFit Challenge and will attend the International Chiefs of Police Annual Conference and Exposition.

Not only are their recent victories putting them on the national stage, but they will also be honored locally. Trooper Topper, and Moreno are to receive recognition at the following Public Safety Commission Meeting held at the DPS Headquarters in Austin, as per the official DPS announcement.
