A man tied to a road rage shooting that terrorized an Austin highway last year is behind bars, police say. Juan Angel Sanchez, 32, was apprehended after a months-long investigation into gunfire that erupted on the 183 toll road in November 2023. He's charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reports CBS Austin.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim's harrowing ordeal started driving northbound when Sanchez, in the middle lane in his white Chevrolet pickup truck, allegedly unleashed a barrage of bullets, shattering the victim's rear window and striking the tailgate. The chain of events was confirmed by the victim's account, who was thankfully uninjured despite one bullet lodging in the driver's seat headrest, noted KXAN.

The turning point came when detectives, aided by license plate data and footage provided by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, pinpointed Sanchez's vehicle. The investigation also revealed that on an unrelated incident, Sanchez was found with a Glock 43X handgun seventeen days after the shooting spree —the same weapon that ballistics testing by Austin Police Crime Lab confirmed was used in the shooting.

Police had their sights set on Sanchez since the issuance of an arrest warrant, recording his every move somehow. After seizing Sanchez's Glock in an unlawful carry of a weapon incident on November 26, matching bullets from the victim's truck with the gun, investigators finally made their move on April 19, CBS Austin detailed. Cell phone records also played a crucial role in placing Sanchez in the shooting's vicinity at the crucial time.
