Avondale's young Picassos and Fridas are getting a chance to let their creative flags fly this summer, thanks to the city's Blank Canvas Summer Showcase and Art Expo. Aspiring artists between the ages of 5 and 17 can grab a free canvas and splash it with their own unique vision. Sharpen those pencils and brushes, kids – registration is open until June 4.

Canvases are up for grabs at the Mountain View Community Center starting June 10 through June 13. The deal is simple: show up anytime from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Thursday, sign up, and walk out with your canvas and a shot at citywide glory. Artistic prodigies must drop off their finished masterpieces between June 24 and June 27 at the same time, same place, according to details published on the city's website.

But what's art without an audience? The creative showcase isn't complete without a proper viewing party. The Avondale Civic Center Complex, City Hall Building will open its doors on Thursday, August 8 at 5:30 p.m. to display the artworks. Dinner's on the house for the mini-Matisse artists, and some will walk away with more than just full bellies – awards are doled out, by age group, to honor the cream of the crop.

For anyone needing more intel, or to register your kiddo, buzz the Avondale Parks & Recreation Department at 623-333-2400, or shoot an email over to [email protected].
