Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson has made a strategic move to strengthen international business connections by officially launching the Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce in the bustling Dallas International District. As a bid to spur trade and tourism between Tanzania and the United States, the Chamber will act as a hub in Dallas, aiming to bring a piece of East Africa's commercial opportunities to Texas.

With his sights set on an increasingly global Dallas, Johnson crafted a plan to enhance the city's foreign dealings, and cultural exchanges, and attract foreign direct investment. On Monday, the mayor celebrated a new benchmark reached in this initiative, "The opening of the Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce in Dallas is the realization of Dallas and Tanzania’s shared vision for collaboration," Johnson was quoted in a City of Dallas announcement. He further emphasized, "This new trade office is another major win for our city and a testament to Dallas’ commitment to increasing its global presence and strengthening relationships with our international allies."

The roots of this project date back to August 2021, when a virtual exchange between Mayor Johnson, and the Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Liberata Mulamula set the stage. Subsequent, in-person discussions with Tanzanian Ambassador Elsie Kanza solidified the path forward, eventually leading to a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2022. Ambassador Kanza acknowledged the significance of the Chamber, "The establishment of the Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce and the operationalization of the Tanzania Trade office in Dallas marks a significant milestone in our quest for deepening commercial partnership between Tanzania and the United States of America," according to the City of Dallas.

In recent years, Dallas has experienced a close-knit relationship with Tanzania, marked by mutual visits from civic leaders and charity initiatives. The establishment of the Chamber is the result of Mayor Johnson's unwavering dedication to expand Dallas's international ties and influence. The Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce is the third international trade office to open in Dallas, a firm step in cementing the city’s place as a vibrant crossroads for international commerce.
