Dunwoody High School Mourns the Loss of 15-Year-Old Student Following On-Campus Cardiac ArrestSource: GoFundMe

The Dunwoody High School community is grappling with the sudden death of a 15-year-old student who died on campus on Monday. The girl, identified by family members only as Mia, suffered a cardiac arrest, stated DeKalb County Fire Rescue, and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she tragically passed away.

During the incident, the school enacted a protocol designed to optimize emergency response, resulting in a lockdown that confused some students. "At first it was just staff closing the door, and we didn't know if we were supposed to go back to class or not during the lockdown. It was just all the teachers and staff closing doors, and keeping us inside the cafeteria," said Thomas Tan, a sophomore at Dunwoody High, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta. The school sent out a letter to parents and guardians from Principal Tom Bass detailing the tragic event and the steps taken to support the students and staff.

The loss has left the victim's sister, Palmala Dieguez, to grapple with the unexpected void. Dieguez described Mia as a private person yet excited about future plans beyond high school. "The school called me around 12-1 o’clock to let me know that she was being rushed to the hospital, that she wasn't breathing good. That is what they told me," she recounted to Fox 5 Atlanta. An official cause of death is yet to be determined.

Dunwoody High School, in responding to the traumatic event, has made arrangements for grief counselors to provide assistance. “We understand the gravity of the situation and have shared the news with our students, teachers, and staff this afternoon," Bass said, emphasizing the availability of support for all impacted. "We are providing the necessary resources and personnel to assist the staff with grief counseling and are here to offer support to anyone affected by this tragedy," Appen Media detailed concerning the full letter issued by the principal.

Moreover, to facilitate emotional recovery and monitoring, Dunwoody has also arranged for its District Crisis Team – including school counselors and psychologists – to be available onsite for as long as needed. In closing his letter, Bass conveyed the school’s commitment to being “here to support and uplift in any way we can," also extending an invitation to families seeking additional assistance from the administrative or school counseling team to make contact, as reported by Appen Media. During this difficult time, the school community extends its deepest sympathies to Mia's loved ones.
