Knoxville Streets to Transform into Pedestrian Haven for 11th Annual Open Streets CelebrationSource: City of Knoxville

Walking, biking, and frolicking will be the modes of transportation of choice along the near mile-long stretch that will be closed to motorized traffic. The event, hosted by Bike Walk Knoxville and backed by financial heavy-hitters like First Horizon and AAA, invites families and their furry friends to experience the streets anew. Riding on the wave of the international Open Streets initiative, Knoxville is joining the ranks of cities worldwide promoting healthier lifestyles and more conversational interactions among neighbors too often separated by the hum of engines.

The city's website boasts Open Streets as an occasion that "connects residents to each other and their neighborhood streets in a fun, exciting way," citing Mayor Indya Kincannon. Emphasizing the broader mission, the Mayor said, "The experience is also an important reminder that we can work together to make our roads safe for all users, regardless of their mode of transportation." Kincannon's office estimates an impressive turnout, as past events have rallied over 3,500 individuals per celebration.

There is something on tap for everyone — local businesses along the route are set to provide activities, while the air will be alive with the sound of live music and the antics of street performers. Food trucks and local eateries alike will be dishing out eats and drinks. Attendees are encouraged to bring their strollers, scooters, skateboards, and bikes, ensuring they take part in the open street joie de vivre. However, cars are invited to take a day off and leave the streets to the two-legged and wheeled participants.
