In a push to ease the housing strain on Miami's elders, Miami-Dade County has announced ground will be broken on Wellspring Apartments, a new affordable housing development in Opa-locka specifically designed for seniors. The ceremony, slated for May 8 and hosted by the County's Department of Public Housing and Community Development along with Integral Florida, signals the start of construction at 14701 NW 27 Avenue, as per Miami-Dade County's official statement.

Putting the spotlight on the active effort to address the affordable housing crunch, the project promises to provide 99 affordable housing units for those aged 62 and over, which will include elements such as 7 studios, 81 one-bedroom, and 11 two-bedroom units according Miami-Dade County's official statement. The $33 million initiative, buoyed by a $1 million infusion from Miami’ Dade’s Affordable Housing Trust, also bets on a 44,000-square-foot medical office and wellness center dedicated to bolstering healthcare access in the community.

The Wellspring Apartments project, framing itself as a beacon of hope for affordable senior living, stands to offer housing to individuals earning below 50% and 60% of the area median income (AMI), earmarking 67 and 32 units respectively for these groups – an offering that speaks volumes about the county's commitment to its aging population.

Set to attend the ceremonial dig are numerous dignitaries including Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, and other local officials from Opa-locka, such as Mayor John Taylor Jr. and Vice-Mayor Natasha L. Ervin among several commissioners, this event is not just a routine groundbreaking but a symbol of progress and intent for the county's senior residents.
