In a tense showdown that unfolded on the evening of May 6, an unidentified man opened fire on Portland police officers, who then shot and killed him, according to authorities. The incident began as the Portland Police Bureau's Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) executed a search warrant linked to a Major Crimes Unit investigation, at a residence on the 100 block of Southeast 124th Avenue, as per the Portland Police Bureau.

Around 6:34 p.m., the situation escalated when the man reportedly fired on officers, prompting law enforcement to respond in kind. Despite immediate medical attention from an on-scene SERT medic, the man was pronounced dead by 6:38 p.m. Officials reported that a firearm was found near his body. The police faced no casualties, however, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, a typical procedure in such incidents.

Chief Bob Day was present following the disturbance and informed Mayor Wheeler's staff and the City Attorney's office about the investigation. In a prior comment to the media, Day expressed relief that the officers were unharmed. "I'm grateful that our officers are going home safe tonight," said Chief Day. "These incidents highlight the risks our folks take every day," according to a statement released by the Portland Police Bureau.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit has taken charge of the ongoing probe into the shooting. Furthermore, the Bureau intends to perform an internal review of the incident - scrutinizing the initial call-out, resources requested, tactics exercised, and the actions taken after the shooting took place. The case will come under the scrutiny of the Police Review Board (PRB), which includes community members, Bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
