A Southwest D.C. man is facing a stint behind bars after pilfering goods from a local CVS, authorities say. Ernest McEachin, 39, could see at least a year in the slammer following his indictment on a second-degree theft charge.

McEachin was bagged by D.C.'s finest and is scheduled for a May 20 arraignment, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith announced. The indictment comes after his February 23 alleged heist of undisclosed merchandise from the shelves of the CVS store, located in Southwest Washington, D.C., then making tracks without coughing up any cash.

The repeat offender who's been slapped with theft charges before, could face harsher penalties given his history. This isn't McEachin's first rodeo; he has two or more prior theft convictions under his belt, which could mean a mandatory minimum of one year in jail per theft count.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, McEachin's case isn't unique. Since September last year, there's been a crackdown resulting in 42 indictments on felony second-degree theft charges for defendants with similar priors. This latest theft case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Erika Norman taking the lead in prosecution.
