After a long hiatus, the Divisadero Art Walk is returning to the neighborhood this Thursday, from 6-10pm.
The community celebration of local artists and small businesses has been dormant since November 2015, but new management is hoping to breathe some fresh life into the event, which was chosen to coincide with Beer Week.
"[The art walk] was so great when it used to happen, and we figured we'd bring it back with a twist," said Jessie Flo McDonald, who's running the art walk's new incarnation with her friend Ava Bernard and Fly Bar owner Erik Anderson.
The trio took a grassroots approach, McDonald said, asking each business on Divisadero if they'd like to get involved. "We hit the streets earlier this time around, and the response was ecstatic," she said.
This time around, the art walk will have more music involved. In addition to displaying installations by graffiti artist CAVE and Hunter Franks, Madrone is showcasing New Orleans-style soul performer Macy Blackman from 6-9pm, and Waziema is hosting a funk band: Silver Sound Palace.
Here's a quick rundown of some of the other events going on this Thursday evening:
Check out work by local artist Pete Doolittle, along with $1 off beer and wine. Also, a special appetizer (TBD) will be offered.
The alternative hair-removal salon will feature a show entitled "99 Pieces Of Art For Your Wall" by Sita Rupe.
Swing by and see some pieces by mixed-media artist Austen Zombres and embroiderer Nora Schuchat.
The local haven for art and cocktails will feature the work of Archana Carter, Andrew Goldfarb, Thomas-Joseph Carrieri, and Kundan Baidwan (who's also a bartender we profiled for our Tapping In series a while back).
Stop by Mojo and snack on some Vietnamese cuisine by Rice Paper Scissors, and check out work by Tom Smith of the band Smokin' Ziggurats (they won't be performing, though).
Along with their rope-centric current show, Cindy Hsu Zell's Ropetition, Rare Device will also invite passersby inside to check out some live screenprinting.
The prolific after-school art and skateboarding program is putting on a "skateboard art show," making sure youth stay on the map in the community. The young shredders also designed this poster for the event:
Along with its usual selection of all things leather, Tanner Goods will be hosting a tasting by Colorado-based craft brewery Oskar Blues, and featuring an art show (still TBD).
Wine Kitchen
Check out “The Sentiment Of Memory" by Mike Goldberg and original art by Alex Viletti. Also, five percent of all food and beverage sales will go to a local nonprofit.
Additionally, Bi-Rite Market will be hosting a tasting by Fort Point Beer Company, Hunted will feature costume jewelry for sale, Onyx is having a sample sale, and Comix Experience will host an open house.
Needless to say, the organizers behind this year's event are excited by the response they've gotten so far.
"The art walk is a positive reason for people to get together and be inspired," said McDonald. "We're excited by the enthusiasm of all these small businesses, offering their spaces to give people an opportunity to support local art."
