'Karma Café' Warms Up On Hayes StreetPhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

Karma Café opened softly today at  1901 Hayes St., formerly Cup A Joe and Bread & Butter Café.

The eatery is the debut restaurant from Mandy Lawson, a barista who's bringing her experience—and a few team members—from SoMa's Fearless Coffee

Offering fresh juices, smoothies, and light breakfasts and lunches, Karma pours  beverages made with Sightglass coffee and Harney & Sons teas.

A house brew coffee runs $3, and a cappuccino costs $4; smoothies, like coconut mango (banana, mango, raw coconut, coconut milk, yogurt, honey, ice, and almond milk) start at $5.

Breakfast and lunch items are moderately priced, with a breakfast burrito and avocado toast (brioche, avocado mash, poached egg, arugula, greens with red wine vinaigrette) both priced at $8.

The shop is newly open after a renovation that improved the kitchen and turned the upstairs mezzanine into into a study lounge; convertible outdoor seating will provide room for sidewalk sipping.

Lawson said she left most of the interior woodwork intact to highlight built-in fixtures that date back to the shop's life as a Lowell pharmacy and acquired some original Lowell bottles as decorative accents.

Karma Café is open daily from 7am-3pm, with expanded hours on the horizon.
