Progress is underway in the conversion of the former American Cyclery Too storefront at 858 Stanyan St., which is seeking to add four stories of housing atop the existing retail space to become a mixed-use development.

The building was sold last year, and it recently cleared its environmental review with the city for the new project. The next hurdle is a hearing before the Planning Department, to be held on September 27.

Since last fall, American Cyclery Too's former space has been occupied by Claudia Mahecha's interior design and furnishing firm The Residents. As part of the project, developer Elevation Architects is seeking to reduce the size of the ground-floor retail storefront to 908 square feet, as well as remodel its facade.

The resulting mixed-use building would be 50 feet high, and would also include a three-car garage with access on Frederick Street.

The three new residential units are currently planned as market-rate, multi-floor units. Two will have three bedrooms and 2.5 baths, while a third will have four bedrooms and 3.5 baths. Each unit would also have a roof deck.

Building height and neighborhood character has been a point of contention for new development on Haight Street, as evidenced by this year's tussle over the size of the proposed affordable housing development project at the site of the Upper Haight McDonald's.

If you want to weigh in on the proposed new units at 858 Stanyan, mark your calendar for the Planning Department hearing on Wednesday, September 27 at 1 p.m., in room 400 of City Hall.
