The building, which houses the District Attorney's office, criminal courts and County Jail Number 4, was evacuated and placed on lockdown. The San Francisco Fire Department extinguished the small fire and the Hall of Justice reopened at 1:35 p.m. However, all court hearings for the day have been cancelled.
"I hear someone set off fireworks on the first floor," said Maxwell Szabo, spokesperson for SF district attorney George Gascon, in a tweet.
No injuries have been reported.
SFPD has reopened all streets that were closed during the investigation.
