The end of the month marks the end of the road for Save My Seat, the Inner Richmond upholsterer founded by owner Lauren Siegel almost seven years ago.

Siegel launched and ran the shop out of the Mission for its first two years. About five years ago, she moved into a storefront at 275 6th Ave., just off of Clement Street.

Siegel said that several factors led to Save My Seat's closure, but the root cause was the impact of city overhead and a lack of housing supply when it came to finding skilled workers.

"The key to making my numbers work are employees that can do great work at an efficient pace," she said. "The rent, plus the lack of employees, don’t really make the numbers work out, and running things on my own is beyond my capacity."

On top of that, she saw a 25 percent increase in the cost of her supplies beginning last fall, as a result of President Trump's import tariffs going into effect.

"Being a skilled tradesman is so hard in San Francisco," she said. "I applaud all small business owners — it’s so much harder than you can imagine."

"I will miss being in my shop in the Inner Richmond more than I can say," she added. "The clients and other merchants [in the neighborhood] made it extremely hard to walk away from."

For future upholstery and seating needs, she suggested her patrons visit Joel’s Upholstery, J&G Upholstery, Redo Renew Upholstery, or the Caning Shop in Berkeley.

Save My Seat will remain open on weekdays through January 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During that time, Siegel will be selling off supplies from the business, including upholstery fabric, furniture, pillows, shelving, work tables, and an industrial serger.
