Nantucket Main Street Reopens After Bomb Threat at Ralph Lauren Store as Police InvestigateSource: Google Street View

Early this morning, the Nantucket Police Department received a bomb threat against the Ralph Lauren store, leading to an evacuation and the temporary shutdown of Main Street. According to a report by Boston 25 News, the police responded to the threat, which was called into their non-emergency line shortly before 6 a.m., and coordinated with the State Police Bomb Squad to clear the affected area. Nantucket Police Lt. Angus MacVicar told the publication, "We received a bomb threat. We responded accordingly, where we evacuated the area and closed the roads." An investigation is underway to trace the source of the call.

Residents in the vicinity of the high-end store, located at 16 Main St., were among those evacuated as a precaution. A team of officers and the State Police bomb squad swept the building but found nothing suspicious. "We're working with different agencies to try to track down the number (the bomb threat) came from," MacVicar told Nantucket Current. He also suggested that Ralph Lauren's high profile could be a reason the particular building was targeted.

By 7 a.m., the building and surrounding streets had re-opened, and life on Main Street began to return to normal. The incident marked the second bomb threat in downtown Nantucket this year. Back in January, the Nantucket Probate Court received a similar threat via email, which led to evacuations and closed down parts of Broad Street.

The bomb threat coincided with an unrelated investigation involving Nantucket High School students and a photo that circulated online, featuring a racial slur. School officials, along with police, are looking into that matter. Lt. MacVicar confirmed the connection, saying, "Police are working with school officials on that investigation," as stated by an earlier Boston 25 News report.
