Fish tales are shifting from the same old whoppers in Lady Bird Lake, thanks to two local anglers reeling in record-setters that have Austin buzzing. Callie White, an Austin native, hauled in a fish that's more at home in a decorative pond than a Texas lake—a mammoth 30-pound koi. White was stunned to snatch up the strikingly colored carp, a sight she never expected while out for her thrice-weekly ritual catch, as reported by KXAN.

Not to be outdone, Cassady Douglas went officially set to break a Lady Bird Lake angling record with a 64-pound smallmouth buffalo fish—a behemoth by local standards. After a herculean 25-minute battle with the fish, Douglas had a certified water body record to brag about. According to  KVUE, noting the angler's deep desire to ink his name in the record books, blew his mind completely when it finally happened.

The koi, typically found in ornate water gardens, left White, and probably the entire local fishing community, more than a little surprised. Recounting her experience on March 17 to KXAN, she detailed how she anticipated a catfish or a common carp—usual suspects in these waters—but instead, snapped up something "very special and a once-in-a-lifetime type of catch."

Meanwhile, Douglas's heavy catch was quickly released back into the lake, leaving just a tale, some photographs, and an official certificate from Texas Parks and Wildlife as proof. The fisher shared with KVUE his hope to someday reconnect with the smallmouth buffalo again, but for now, the memory of that "great experience" will have to suffice.
