Man Severely Injured in High-Speed ORV Crash in Blue Lake Township, Muskegon CountySource: Muskegon County Sheriff's Office

A 29-year-old man was left with severe leg injuries after his four-wheeler collided with a vehicle in Blue Lake Township, officials said. The incident, which took place on April 26 around midday near the intersection of Louisa Avenue and Forest Avenue, saw emergency responders from the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office at the scene, where the man was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to WWMT.

The crash, which occurred at an open intersection without traffic control signs, involved the off-road vehicle (ORV) traveling at a "high rate of speed," and the man operating the ORV was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident as per authorities, WOODTV reported. The township had passed an ordinance in 2023 that allows ORVs on the roads, nonetheless, they are mandated to adhere to various conditions for operation.

In a separate incident early on the same day, a car rear-ended an Amish carriage in Mecosta County, leading to three occupants being ejected and sustaining minor injuries. The victims included a 71-year-old driver and two passengers, aged 13 and 46, with the eldest being taken to the hospital as a precaution, 13 ON YOUR SIDE confirmed. The collision happened around 8:45 a.m. on Jefferson Road near 165th Avenue when a 42-year-old woman from Morley struck the carriage while driving eastbound.

The string of road mishaps underscores tensions between traditional transportation modalities and the evolution of local ordinances adapting to contemporary vehicle use, as demonstrated by the recent changes in Blue Lake Township's approach to ORV regulation which has now led to this serious incident reminding the community of the inherent risks that come with blending disparate modes of travel on shared thoroughfares.
