McKinley Park Man Sentenced to 50 Years for 2016 Brighton Park Teen Murder in ChicagoSource: Library of Congress

A McKinley Park man received a hefty 50-year prison sentence following his conviction for the 2016 murder of a 17-year-old boy from Brighton Park, according to the Illinois Attorney General's office. Sergio Gonzalez, 29, was found guilty of first-degree murder for the fatal drive-by shooting of David Gonzalez, who was not related to him, on the Southwest Side of Chicago. The Chicago Tribune reported the sentencing took place on Friday.

On the evening of January 7, 2016, David Gonzalez suffered eight gunshot wounds from a passing vehicle while walking in the 3100 block of West 41st Place in Brighton Park. The assailant, Sergio Gonzalez, along with accomplice Jose Juarez, was apprehended by police after a chase that concluded 11 blocks from the scene of the crime. FOX 32 Chicago noted that David Gonzalez was taken to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities believe the murder stemmed from animosities between rival gangs—the Latin Kings and Two-Six. Juarez, Gonzalez's co-defendant, was previously sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the teenager's death. The case against Juarez held up on appeal, the convictions were upheld by the Illinois Appellate Court two years ago, as mentioned in the reports from the Attorney General and court records.

Adding to his legal woes, Sergio Gonzalez faces additional charges including an alleged 2010 murder, as well as attempted murder and participating in a group attack while in custody at Cook County Jail. He is scheduled for another court appearance on May 21.
