Bucks County Launches Video Red-Light Enforcement, 5,200 Warnings Issued in BensalemSource: Facebook/Bansalem Police

Bucks County has put red-light runners on notice with a new video enforcement program that has already snagged thousands of violations. Officials in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, launched the initiative on April 1, targeting two notoriously dangerous intersections with a history of traffic mishaps, as per reports from CBS News Philadelphia.

In the first month alone, over 5,200 warnings have been dished out to drivers ignoring red lights at Street Road at Knights Road, and at Route 1 at Old Lincoln Highway. According to Detective Sergeant Glenn Vandegrift, captured by the traffic cameras that were listed as one of America's most dangerous, a few years ago was Street Road at Knights Road. "We want to change behavior," Vandegrift told CBS News Philadelphia, indicating the serious intent behind the program to deter reckless driving.

Lt. Robert Bugsch with Bensalem Township police emphasized that the program's primary goal is not to generate revenue but to improve safety by altering driver behavior, as noted by an Action News interview. "We chose this specific vendor due to the fact that the township did not have to put any expenses out and we also don't receive any revenue from the violations," Bugsch said. The effort seems to be paying off, with the 6abc Data Journalism team uncovering that there have been 64 crashes at Street Road and Knights Road and another 79 at Route 1 and Old Lincoln Highway over a decade.

The program's grace period will be up on May 31, police said, throwing a $100 fine at any driver caught by the cameras running a red light, without affecting their driving record, insurance rates, or CDL status. As reported by NBC Philadelphia, officials are considering expanding the red light camera program to other problematic intersections, aiming to cement safer driving habits.
