A baffling car crash at a Westford, Massachusetts shopping center left the driver injured and local authorities scratching their heads. Yesterday, a vehicle inexplicably careened over an embankment at the Cornerstone Square plaza, coming to rest near a Market Basket store, as reported by NBC Boston.

The crash, which occurred off Littleton Road around 12:14 p.m., seemed to be an unforeseen mishap, according to the Westford police. The driver's identity has not been disclosed, but they were swiftly transported to an area hospital. Details regarding their condition remain undisclosed, and no arrests are anticipated in connection with the incident. Police told NBC Boston it appeared to be a freak accident.

Witnesses, including Fox Redfield, described the prior behavior of the driver as non-aggressive. "It honestly kind of seemed like he was spacing out and thought that was a road. It wasn’t aggressive or fast or hostile. I’m honestly surprised his car made it over the edge, because it was really slow," Redfield said in an interview with WHDH. The scene remained active into the afternoon as the car dangled precariously over the wall.

Earlier, state police had received several calls from a distressed motorist on Interstate 495, near Westford, who requested help but failed to specify the nature of the emergency, WCVB reports. Soon after, the same vehicle was involved in the peculiar crash at the Market Basket parking lot. The Westford Fire Department stated the driver was walking on his own following the accident but was still transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Authorities said that the driver had made a call for help before the crash without indicating any specific problem. Cleanup at the site involved removing items from the vehicle including a machete, an ax, and a hammer, before the car was towed. The bizarre sequence of events leading up to, and following the crash, remains under investigation by the Westford police. "The operator of the vehicle was not arrested, and... the nature of the crash remains under investigation by the Westford police," officials elaborated, according to WCVB.
