Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers found themselves on the scene of a three-car collision involving one of their cruisers early Friday in Northeast Memphis. Local Memphis reports that the incident occurred just after midnight at the intersection of Appling Road and Valley Mist Drive.

Trying to turn left onto Valley Mist Drive, a Nissan Altima was struck from behind by a northbound MPD cruiser, causing it to spin out and hit a second Altima which was waiting at a stop sign. According to FOX13 Memphis, the passengers of the second Altima sustained non-critical injuries.

The officer involved in the crash escaped injury, while the driver responsible for the accident was cited for failure to yield. The third vehicle's driver was similarly cited for driving without a license and insurance. MPD data reveals a noticeable trend with 124 collisions involving MPD vehicles this year, marking a decrease from 466 in the previous year.

Following the incident, the police car was hauled away, having suffered front-end damage, witnessed by WREG. They are reaching out to ascertain further details about the crash, including the specific cause and whether the officer involved sustained any injuries.
