A grisly discovery was made on Route 91 south in Hatfield yesterday morning, when a motorist spotted a severely damaged 2016 Honda Civic in the woods. Troopers from the Northampton Barracks, who arrived at the scene in the area of the 30.8-mile marker, found the lifeless body of 31-year-old South Hadley resident Daniel Ducharme near the wreckage. A bear was also seen near the scene, having apparently come into contact with Ducharme's remains.

According to initial reports by State Police, the accident occurred hours before the discovery, with the Honda traveling southbound. For undetermined reasons, Ducharme lost control of the vehicle, striking the guardrail multiple times before veering off the road and crashing through several trees. Responders concluded that Ducharme was likely already dead from the crash and either fell or was dragged out of the car by the bear.

The aftermath of the crash prompted an extensive investigation involving the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Hampshire/Franklin. The State Police-Northampton Barracks is also involved in piecing together the circumstances of the crash.

Investigators have yet to determine the precise cause of the accident, and the involvement of the bear presents an unusual twist. Police mentioned that the animal vacated the vicinity as first responders were working at the scene. Authorities urge anyone with information about the accident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
