A Toledo man is behind bars following a hair-trigger highway confrontation that nearly turned deadly on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Michigan State Police said Monday. The 54-year-old suspect is accused of pointing a pistol and opening fire during a road rage spat with a 68-year-old motorist, neither of whom was injured in the melee.

According to The Detroit News, which first reported the story, the heated encounter unfolded around 11:05 a.m. south of Laplaisance Road. In the gray BMW, the suspect allegedly unleashed a single bullet after brandishing the firearm next to the senior driver. Following the shot, which missed its mark, both parties decamped the highway at Laplaisance Road.

The intended victim, demonstrating poise under pressure, managed to find refuge at a nearby gas station, promptly alerting Monroe County Central Dispatch to the incident. During the same time, officers tracked down the shooter at Harwood Plaza, where he was apprehended without further incident, as per Michigan State Police's release.

With help from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the authorities found the gun involved in the suspect's car and took him into custody. The Toledo man, now cooling his heels at the Monroe County Jail, faces a slate of charges, including felonious assault and reckless discharge of a firearm. ClickOnDetroit reports that the man was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and brandishing a firearm.

Investigators with the Michigan State Police are encouraging anyone who might have information about the shooting to step forward and have provided a contact number for tips: (734) 242-3500. The appeal was echoed in the reports from multiple local news outlets, including FOX 2 Detroit, as the investigation into this dangerous display of motorist anger continues.
